About McCarthy Tax Preparation
We are a tax preparation and planning firm that has been serving clients since 2001. Our mission is to help families across the US with their tax needs. We accomplish this as a virtual CPA firm.
Our employees are scattered throughout the US and we work with our clients through a mix of video conferences, phone calls, and secure client folders to exchange information. Working virtually allows us to be flexible and serve our clients when it is convenient for them, often times in the evening and on the weekends. (No more drives to the CPA office to hand over tax documents!) We strive to respond to your calls and emails within one business day.
While our clients are our top priority, providing a flexible work environment for our employees is important too. Allowing our employees to work from home allows them to take time for their families when they need it to provide them a quality of life that isn’t always possible while working in an office environment.
John McCarthy – Founder
John is the founder of McCarthy Tax Preparation and a CPA with a background in public accounting and income tax. He’s helped numerous individuals, families and small businesses with income taxes and planning for the past 15+ years. He is also a member of the AICPA, Ohio Society of CPAs, and a past member of XY Planning Network, a leading organization of fee-only financial advisors who specialize in helping members of Gen X and Gen Y. John graduated from Purdue University in 1998 with a Bachelor’s in Science in Accounting.
A self described “money nerd” John enjoys listening to personal finance podcasts and reading tax code and IRS instructions. When he’s not thinking about CPA stuff, he likes to spend time hiking with his family at the Cincinnati Nature Center and volunteering at the local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), Earth Shares CSA.
Raising their family of homeschooled kids has been the focus and joy for John and his wife Sarah. McCarthy Tax Preparation was created to better serve families. By running a home-based, virtual business, they can be closer to home and share in their children’s learning and development. It is exciting to watch them grow and learn something new every day!
Sarah Bowden – CPA
Sarah is a CPA with over 10 years’ experience in accounting and business management. She graduated summa cum laude from Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 2006 and has since gained valuable experience working in the media industry and public accounting.
Sarah has often been called the “Excel Queen” and has a love of spreadsheets. Give her a project to manage or a problem to solve, and she will be more than happy to rise to the occasion. Sarah has successfully led software conversions within a corporate environment and enjoys helping individuals and small businesses use technology to its utmost potential.
She loves working with clients one-on-one and helping her clients save money on their taxes.
When she is not working, Sarah enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She loves the freedom that working in a virtual business provides for her family. Sarah also enjoys paper crafting, reading suspense novels and teaching the occasional yoga class on the side.
Kellie Palm – Bookkeeper
Kellie earned her Associates Degree in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati in 2001. Since then she has gained 15+ years of experience working with corporate clients, small business owners and charitable organizations. Kellie enjoys bookkeeping and has developed a love of all things Quickbooks.
When she’s not helping clients she keeps busy with family. Kellie and her husband, Matt have four kids, three of whom are still at home and an English mastiff named Samson. Their oldest son is a Marine and plans on pursuing Law Enforcement and they couldn’t be more proud! Kellie homeschools their younger three and is involved in a local co-op for some classes where she also keeps the books as Treasurer.
Kellie recently moved to the country in 2016 to garden, expand Matt’s hunting; keep future chickens and maybe some goats! They are very active with their local church & enjoy the fellowship and service opportunities.
Becky Durbin – Administrative Assistant
Becky graduated with an Associates Degree in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati in 1992. Since then, she has served in an administrative and Human Resource capacity in corporate and non-profit settings. Becky is in charge of keeping us all in line, which is a huge job but one that she excels at!
Becky and her husband of 20 years, Dan, have three children that are homeschooled and very active in sports all year long. They are also active with various volunteer opportunities in their community.
